DnD Backgrounds 2024
In Dungeons and Dragons, a background represents the occupation, environment, and lifestyle that most influenced your character during their formative years. It answers questions like where you lived, what you did for a living, and what skills you developed before becoming an adventurer.
Backgrounds are not personality traits or moral alignments. Two characters with the same background can be completely different people. Instead, backgrounds explain how your character learned certain skills, developed talents, and gained practical knowledge that still matters once adventuring begins.
While a class defines what your character dedicates their life to now, a background explains how they got there. During DnD Character Creation, your background is chosen alongside your species, and together they form your character’s origin, shaping ability score bonuses, proficiencies, feats, and early identity.

Parts of a DnD Background
Each background in D&D 2024 is built from the same core components. When you choose a background, you gain all of the following elements.
Ability Score Increases
Each background lists 3 ability scores. You choose how to apply 3 total points by either increasing one score by 2 and another by 1, or increasing all 3 scores by 1. None of these increases can raise a score above 20. This system replaces ability score increases previously tied to species.
Feat
Every background grants a specific Origin feat. Origin feats represent talents your character developed before adventuring and are designed for level 1 characters. These feats provide meaningful, active abilities rather than passive flavor.
Skill Proficiencies
Each background grants proficiency in 2 skills, reflecting the practical knowledge gained during that stage of your character’s life.
Tool Proficiency
Every background grants proficiency with 1 tool, either a specific tool or one chosen from Artisan’s Tools. Tool proficiencies play a larger role in exploration, crafting, and problem-solving.
Equipment
Each background offers a choice between a starting equipment package or 50 GP, allowing you to customize how your character begins play.
DnD Backgrounds and Character Creation
DnD Backgrounds now carry mechanical weight equal to species and class. Ability score increases and Origin feats remain relevant at every level, meaning your background continues to shape your character long after the campaign begins.
This system encourages creative combinations. A heavily armored warrior might come from a peaceful farming background. A spellcaster might have learned discipline through military service or survival on the streets. Backgrounds support both optimization and storytelling without forcing characters into strict roles.
Because ability scores come from backgrounds, players are free to pair any background with any species and class without penalty. This flexibility is a core design goal of D&D 2024.
Using Older DnD Backgrounds
Backgrounds from older D&D books remain usable. When selecting an older background, you simply apply the new framework. Choose ability score increases using the modern system, and if the background does not grant a feat, select an Origin feat of your choice.
This ensures backward compatibility while keeping all characters balanced under the same rules.
Choosing a DnD Background
Choosing a DnD background is about more than backstory. In DnD 2024, your background directly affects your ability scores, skills, and Origin feat, which means it shapes how your character plays from the very first session.
If you already know your class, your background can either reinforce its strengths or patch its weaknesses. A Fighter might choose Soldier to double down on combat effectiveness, or Artisan to gain practical utility and equipment support. A Wizard might lean into Sage for deeper arcane knowledge, or pick Guard to gain early battlefield awareness through Alert.
DnD Backgrounds are also a powerful way to support your role in the party. If your group lacks social presence, backgrounds like Merchant, Noble, or Charlatan provide Persuasion, Insight, and Charisma-based feats. If exploration and survival matter, Guide, Farmer, and Wayfarer offer tools, skills, and resilience that keep the party moving when supplies run thin.
You can also use DnD backgrounds to add contrast rather than optimization. A Paladin with a Criminal or Charlatan background creates instant narrative tension. A Barbarian raised as a Farmer or Hermit feels grounded and believable. A Rogue who began life as a Scribe or Sage brings knowledge where muscle is expected.
Finally, consider how your DnD background interacts with your species. Long-lived species often pair naturally with scholarly or contemplative backgrounds. Characters from harsh or unstable origins benefit from resilience-focused backgrounds. None of these choices lock you in, but they strongly influence how your character feels at the table.
More than anything, a background should make sense for your character’s story. It represents the life they lived before the adventure began and explains why they have the tools they carry today.
